autumn leaves

sunmi's newsletter #1 / october 27, 2026

It's autumn in Baltimore and I'm very sleepy. I have to take a train to DC in an hour to do an event at Fantom Comics (<3) and I'm thinking about how I wanted to share some drawings I did recently in this newsletter, but then changed my mind and didn't feel like it actually. So instead here's some photos I've taken over the past month or so, and a video of what I'm presuming is a brown trout in Jones Falls up by Baltimore Clayworks. I'm enamoured with fish and birds when I see them, but not so possessed with the need to accurately identify them. It just pleases me to know they're around, and to observe them.

My friend also noted the beautiful, large turning maple outside our house and I said that it's also been pleasing to me to watch it change each day. He joked that I should open my phone and look up a video of a tree on YouTube instead. This is in context to post-lesson plan discussions for teaching clay and ceramics to children, and our unease at the state of reality and unreality. It makes me grateful to have had the kind of childhood where the internet was new and present, but not ever-present to the point of driving people into a hyper-paranoid state over being perceived. But that still happened. As a child I was paranoid about being perceived. As an adult, I've made peace with it. Still, I'm figuring out how to yield what little control I might have over that.

Being attentive to my mind, body, and its relationship to all its surroundings has become my utmost priority. Any art that comes of that is just a result.

The last event we have planned for the year (coming up soon) is Brooklyn Expo Of Comics, November 14 & 15! If you live in the NYC area or plan to travel, hope to see you there! <3

multimodal figure drawing // october Hi all! Figure drawing coming up again next week on Weds 10/21, 6-8 PM at Baltimore Free School/Red Emma's as per usual! Our next model is Abdul-Azeez (he/him). He will be the first model without experience figure modeling prior to this night, which is something I've also wanted to put forward in this event.
